THE YELLOW BOAT is based on the true story of David and Sonja Saar's
son, Benjamin, who was born with congenital hemophilia, and died in
1987 at the age of 8 of AIDS related complications. A uniquely gifted
visual artist, Benjamin's buoyant imagination transformed his
physical and emotional pain into a blaze of colors and shapes in his
fanciful drawings and paintings.

The story of THE YELLOW BOAT Is a
glorious affirmation of a child's life, and the strength and courage
of all children. The title comes from a Scandinavian folksong that
tells of three little boats: "One was blue, one was red, and one was
yellow as the sun. They sailed far out to sea. The blue one returned
to the harbor. The red one sailed home too. But the yellow boat
sailed up to the sun." Benjamin always concluded his bedtime ritual
by saying, "Mom, you can be the red boat or the blue beat, but I am
the yellow boat." This play celebrates the remarkable voyage of
Benjamin life.

A Synopsis of Seussical: The Musical

In this family-friendly show about the power of imagination and belief in yourself, the Cat in the Hat acts as the emcee to steer us through the world of Dr. Seuss and his well-loved characters. We are first introduced to Horton the Elephant, who hears and rescues the citizens of Who, the ?tiniest planet in the sky? by placing them gently on a clover. His fellow Jungle of Nool residents, including the Sour Kangaroos and Wickersham Brothers, think he is crazy for talking to a speck of dust.

The Cat lets us zoom in and discover the world of Whoville, including the Who Family of Mr. & Mrs. Mayor and their son Jojo, who has been suspended from school for causing havoc with his extraordinary thinks. Jojo?s parents send Jojo to General Genghis Kahn Schmitz and his military school. After a long day of marching, Jojo and Horton hear each other and become friends when they realize their imaginations are alike.

Meanwhile, Miss Gertrude McFuzz has noticed Horton?s truly unique personality, but despairs he will never notice her because of her plain one-feather tail. The flashy Mayzie La Bird and her Bird Girls arrive and advise Gertrude her solution lies in some special tail-growing pills.

The Wickershams mischievously steal the clover from Horton and after a spectacular chase, it is dropped into a hundred-mile wide cloverfield. Gerturde shows up to confess her feelings and show off her new tail, but Horton is too busy searching for the Whos to notice.

Mayzie happens to be stuck on an egg nearby and when she see Horton, she convinces him to sit on the egg for her while she takes a ?short? vacation. Several months later she has not returned, but Horton refuses to back down on his promise to protect the egg. Hunters come, and Gertrude attempts to save Horton, but her tail is now too heavy for her to fly or even walk well. So Horton is captured and sold to the circus. Mayzie ends up visiting the circus as it passes through Palm Beach, and after seeing Horton?s commitment, gives him the egg for good.

Back on Who, the General has led his Cadets to the trenches of the Butter Battle, where Jojo confronts the General about the ridiculousness of the war. Jojo storms off home, finding the way with the help of his hunches and the Cat.

Gertrude ditches her overlarge tail and travels through much peril to find and rescue Horton from the circus. When Horton learns everything Gertrude has gone through to help him, and to find his long-lost clover, he finally realizes how amazing she is. Unfortunately the Sour Kangaroos and Wickershams find them, and Horton is put on trial for disturbing the peace and talking to a speck. The judge sentences Horton to the Nool Asylum and the clover to be boiled in oil. Now the Whos must prove their existence once and for all. Despite much yelling and noise-making, the tiny citizens are unable to make themselves heard until Jojo comes to the rescue with an ingenious new ?think.? As the adventure winds down, the egg cracks open to reveal a baby elephant bird, which Horton and Gertrude agree to care for together. The Who and Nool residents join together to remind the audience of ?The Thinks You Can Think? if you just try.
